Papel has been described as a powerfully elegant application because many of its features are not immediately apparent, but are easily accessed. They're also very intuitive, and some perform multiple tasks depending upon the context.

For example, you can do a word count in the workspace by pressing F9. With nothing selected a word count is done on all main papel types, eg., chapters. If multiple papels are selected then a count is done on those, and if a papel in a linked line is selected the count is done on that one and all following in the line. A pop-up menu allows any single papel's content to be counted at any time. In edit windows selected text is counted, or all words if nothing is selected.

Using the Compilation dialog allows you to re-order sections of your work, then compile them into a single papel, so you can see how different chapter arrangements work for example. Coupled with user-definable Themes, the fast workspace grab-scrolling, and the ability to arrange and re-arrange papels as you choose, you'll find a new freedom that no other writing tool provides.
